Uses: Potassium cyanide is an important chemical material for heat treatment in ore floatation to extract gold, silver, electroplating and steel. Especially in the field of metal surface electroplating, the potassium cyanide spray possesses the advantages of higher electric current efficiency, broader allowable range of current density and more homogeneous electron-attachment compared with the sodium cyanide spray. It’s not only first used in electroplating of noble metals of gold & silver, but also widely used in electroplating of copper & zinc. It’s also used as analytical chemical reagent and applied in manufacture of organic nitriles, acrylonitrile & organic glass ,pharmacy, photograph, etching & lithoprint.

Physical Properties: Molecular formula KCN, molecular weight 65.12,white pellet, easy deliquescence, bitter almond taste, apyrous itself, easily dissolved in water & alcohol, slightly dissolved in glycerin, methanol & liquid ammonia. Absorbing moisture and carbon dioxide in the air to be resolved gradually to exude hydrogen cyanide with bitter almond taste. Its water solution may dissolve kinds of metals to complex compound. Its meltage may corrode glass & quartz. Extremely Poisonous!

Storage: The worksite shall be reasonably ventilated. The operator must be specially trained and abide by the operation rules strictly. The storage tanks must be sealed and stored in a special locked storeroom, far away from fire & heat and never mix-stored and transported with nitrate, nitrite, chlorate and acids. The management rules for severe poisonous goods must be obeyed stringently. The package tanks are prohibited for other use, and must be cleaned thoroughly before discard.

Transportation:The poisonous goods No. for Potassium cyanide is CN61001,UN No.1680,package mark 13 and category Ⅰ.During transportation, it shall be loaded and unloaded gently to avoid damage of the tanks. It must be routed and never parked in populous zones & residential areas.

Toxicity: Potassium cyanide is of Category 6.1 poison. It’s severe poisonous and can be absorbed by respiratory tract, alimentary canal and skin to result in acute poisoning. Large dose of absorption may cause sudden death. It’s apyrous itself and react violently with nitrate, nitrite and chlorate to cause explosion hazards. If high heated or contact with acid & moisture, it creates severe poisonous hydrogen cyanide gas.

Safety notes: The highest allowable content for potassium cyanide in the air is 1.0 mg(HCN) /m3(skin) . The operators shall wear protective glasses, clothes and use the suitable respirators. In case of contingency, gas mask must be used. Smoking,eating and drinking are prohibited in the worksite. The workclothes shall be placed and washed in the designated place. First-aid medicines and equipments shall be prepared and provided at any time.

First-aid measures: First of all take the poisoned person away from the site at once and remove to fresh air, take off his contaminated clothes and clean his skin. If splashed into eyes, flush immediately with running clean water at first, and then with 2%-3% boric acid liquid. If swallowed ,carry out gastric lavage with 1:2000 potassium permanganate solution, or 5% sodium thiosulfate solution or clean water. Inhalation of hydrogen cyanide or potassium cyanide dust will cause poisonous hazard. The poisoned person shall be treated accordingly. For the slightly poisoned, breathe fresh air, inhale one bottle of isoamyl nitrite,intravenous inject 10 ml 50% sodium thiosulfate when necessary. For the serious poisoned, inhale oxygen ,intravenous inject 10-12 ml 3% sodium nitrite, &20-40 ml 50% sodium thiosulfate with the same syringe needle. For the breath & heart stopped, make heart recovery treatment at once and sent to hospital for further rescue.

Fire-protection measures: If fire happened, extinguish with dry powder & sand. Never use acid & alkali and carbon dioxide fire extinguisher.
